Many insurance companies will ask you how many miles you drive and will factor them into your car insurance rate. The more miles you drive, the higher your fare could be. At Progressive, in most states, we ask you how many miles you drive to work. Your personal auto policy with Progressive can cover you while you're driving a rental car, up to the extent of the coverage you have for your own vehicle.
For example, if you have comprehensive coverage for your car, that protection will extend to most rental vehicles. You can generally stay on your parents' car insurance policy as a registered driver if you live at home or if you're a full-time college student. That means you're still covered when you drive your parents' vehicles. And unlike health insurance, there's no age limit that prevents you from staying on your parents' car insurance.
However, if you're moving permanently, you'll usually need your own car insurance policy. You can change insurers at any time, even if you just renewed your policy with another insurance company. We charge a higher rate for customers who are more likely to file claims and a cheaper auto insurance rate for customers who are least likely to file claims. However, the vehicle must be regularly parked at your residence overnight for Progressive to insure it in your policy.
You can pay for your car insurance policy by credit card, PayPal, online check, personal check, money order, or electronic funds transfer (EFT) from your checking account. However, drivers who choose not to purchase auto insurance must show that they have sufficient funds to meet the state's financial responsibility requirements (PDF) in the event that they cause an accident. If you lend your car to someone and that person causes an accident, Progressive may cover some of the damages they are responsible for. The age of your car may affect the overall insurance rate, but a higher or lower reading on the odometer isn't something insurers generally use to set rates.
If you or your spouse own a vehicle, you may decide to insure it with your own car insurance policy or with your parent's policy. Many insurance companies, including Progressive, offer roadside assistance as optional coverage in your car insurance policy. In addition, if your policy includes car rental reimbursement and your car is damaged in a covered accident, Progressive will pay the rent (up to a specified limit and term) while your own car is repaired. Depending on the state and the insurer, you may be able to add your car to your parents' insurance if you live with them and your car stays at home.
